Exploring the Rise of Metamodern AI

This is our flagship research that informs all other research initiatives of Future HOW, conducted in collaboration with RIVER, a Stockholm-based collective that is developing wisdom-guided AI systems.

By “metamodern AI” we mean systems of artificial intelligence and their applications centered on the nexus of inner depth and outer complexity. Those systems will be equally capable to support the inner development of their human users/participants and the societal/political progress towards a listening society.

Wisdom-oriented Collaborative Hybrid Intelligence

As mentioned here, wisdom is relational and “the more consequential the challenge or opportunity a group faces, the greater the need to enlist the support of wisdom-guided Collaborative Hybrid Intelligence (CHI) of AI and human agents.” In those cases, the design and uses of AI can and needs to be guided by the highest stages of development available to its designers and and users. But that’s only half of the story, the other half is that purpose-built AI mentors can also contribute to reaching those stages.  The “how?” is one of the central questions of our meso-scale action research. (See table at the top of the page.)

Prompt engineer ==> AI whisperer ==> AI shaman

The practice of working/playing with AI bots makes us better at it. It’s a developmental journey that has three stages beyond the spontaneous explorations:

A prompt engineer is a person who trains a language model with “prompt-based learning.”  The term is also applied to anyone who can write prompts that create useful output by a generative AI. Highly competent prompt engineers master the right quadrants of the matrix.

An AI whisperer is someone familiar with the affordances and constraints  of the AI agent,  the quest behind querying the AI, and the inner game of paying attention to what s/he pays attention and why., AI whisperers have some knowledge of the right quadrants and are immersed in the left quadrants.

An AI shaman is an AI whisperer who is using his/her craft for healing the community when it is off balance and restricting the flow of life energies. AI shamans are using their talents and competences for addressing societal ills. Like in the case of AI whisperers, those competences are co-evolving with the emergent and sometimes unpredictable properties of generative AI. 

Our action research is addressing the challenges of “the Prompt engineer ==> AI whisperer ==> AI shaman” learning path and how people are meeting them.

AI, a New Player in the Great Story

The “great story” is the evolution of matter, life, mind, and society. This research area deals with a transdisciplinary understanding of generative AI, seen through the lens of evolutionary biology, meta-crisis theory, knowledge ecology, metamodern philosophy, radical sociology, political economy, and public policy.

In this context, we will also examine the emergence of the planetary metabeing enabled by humanity’s general intellect, including AI. Can this hybrid, socio-technical metabeing represent a new species, a new branch on the tree of life, which transcends and includes us as autonomous and interdependent individuals? 

Future HOW will dive into this mundo-scale stream of our AI explorations when we’ll have reached sufficient progress in the research at the micro- (individual), meso- (community), and macro- (societal) scale.
